Living Happily Ever After:
Couples Talk About Lasting Love

by Laurie Wagner, Stephanie Rausser and David Collier

Published in 1997, Living Happily Ever After: Couples Talk About Lasting Love, is a photography / essay book about 30 couples from around the country who have been together for 30 years or longer. The book came out of a documentary film that my partner David Collier and I worked on called For Better or For Worse. The film came out in 1994 and was nominated for an Academy Award that same year. The film, which can be rented or purchased through David Collier's Studio B website, is a funny, bittersweet portrait of five couples who had been together for 50 years or longer.

Living Happily Ever After, the book, taken off from the film and is an intimate look into the lives of married couples who have stayed together through thick and thin, good times and bad. I interviewed at least 75 couples before I selected 30 for the book. My criteria for choosing was based on how honest I felt they were being with me about the intricacies of sex, love, fighting, communication, and family issues. If I was in an interview with a couple and they said things like, "Oh my, no, we've never had a fight in our lives. Everything has been just perfect from the start!" I thanked them and then turned the tape recorder off. Honestly, the last thing I wanted this book to be was a re-hash of some Hollywood walk into the sunset love story. There's enough of that out there and more of it would only make people feel bad about the marriages they were in. Hey, I've been married for a number of years now. I know marriage takes work. It's never perfect and I wanted the book to reflect real people in real marriages.
